Beschreibung:
Many cities in the Global South are facing rapid population growth accompanied by radical social, economic, ecological and spatial upheavals. The course provides an overview of challenges during the transformation processes of cities and societies. We will review theoretical concepts within the specific context of selected countries and discuss fundamental development aspects regarding urban infrastructure, mobility, resources, housing, informal settlements, poverty, environmental issues, sustainable development, climate change and migration. We will observe these general questions in the local context of the metropolitan areas of Manila/ Philippines and Buenos Aires/ Argentina. These two cities serve as case studies for urban areas in low- and middle-income countries. Other cities might be added according to the interests of the students. We will reflect critically on the history of development cooperation, while the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) set the contemporary framework for our discussions.
Objectives:
- Discuss major issues of urban development and transformation in emerging and developing countries
- Introduce development cooperation as a potential professional specialization
- Use of dynamic and visual tools in order to illustrate statistical information or facilitate a comparative analysis

Selected books will guide the course, available at the HCU library (Semesterapparat):
- Daron Acemoglu & James A. Robinson (2012): Why nations fail. The origins of power, prosperity and poverty. (Available in English and German language)
- Daron Acemoglu & James A. Robinson (2019): The narrow corridor: States, societies, and the fate of liberty (Available in English)
- Johan Norberg (2016): Progress. Ten reasons to look forward to the future. (Available in English and German language)
- Abhijit V. Banerjee & Esther Duflo (2012): Poor Economics. A radical rethinking of the way to fight global poverty. (Available in English and German language)
- Abhijit V. Banerjee & Esther Duflo (2019): Good economics for hard times. (Available in English)

Before the pandemic we usually offered an excursion to Frankfurt when the German development cooperation company (GIZ) invited to a "Student's day of development cooperation". It was a good opportunity to meet experts and researchers specialized in urban development in foreign countries. In case GIZ organizes the event this year, we would travel.

Please be aware that this course takes the form of a seminar, not a lecture. It needs your participation! You should enjoy to discuss the questions related to the course and exchange opinions among each other. It is necessary to read at least one of the books. They are really good and give quite a lot of inspiration. Groups of two or three students are expected to present and discuss the relevant ideas, issues or aspects raised in the mentioned books. Finally, the students must submit a paper, analyzing a selected "development topic", according to your interests, in March 2024. All materials and documents of the course will be shared on the Moodle Campus.
