Wood for Future?

Wood is one of the oldest and at the same time most traditional building materials of mankind. In densely wooded regions, it has always been available in large quantities as a natural resource and spread beyond the region early on via trade routes. Over the course of time, many traditional crafts have developed around wood as a raw material. With the introduction of new production and processing methods, the uses of this natural material have constantly evolved.

In recent times, wood has virtually experienced a renaissance in the building industry. Increasingly, the building material is also being used solidly in the construction of buildings and even in high-rise structures. Wood is seen as a great hope for revolutionising the building industry towards a more sustainable building culture.

But what exactly is sustainable about wood in construction? To answer this question, numerous, often complex factors have to be taken into account. Among other things, the approach to its cultivation plays a role in the extraction (harvesting) of the raw material, its ability to bind CO2, the emissions released during its life cycle, the recyclability of the finished building product as well as possibilities in material recycling of waste wood.

In the course "Wood for Future?" we want to understand the constructional characteristics of wood as a building material and take a closer look at modern timber construction especially with regard to its ecological footprint. We want to identify the relevant factors and analyse the individual life cycle phases of wood as a building material in more detail. We would also like to investigate the question of demand and availability of wood in the use of different timber construction methods.

In the first part of the course, the theoretical basics will be worked out independently by the course participants and communicated by means of written papers and presentations within the course. A joint handbook on the basics of sustainable construction with wood will be written.

In the second part, the participants will develop comparable designs based on different timber construction methods with a focus on construction. The aim is to create an objective comparison of the individual construction methods in order to evaluate them with regard to the criteria determined in the first part.

In the beginning the course work is therefore theoretical (research, documentation, etc.). On the basis of these results, a new type of evaluation of the construction methods including their consequences and capabilities will be developed, which will finally be applied to a constructive design task. Work will be done in small groups of two to three participants.
