Cities are a mesh of services and businesses, needs and aspirations, e-scooters and rain gardens. All these different aspects make up (or destroy) our cities. The United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 11 (SDG 11) sets targets and sub-targets to address these different urban issues and ensure that communities and the environment thrive in cities.
In this Rethinking Our Cities course, students will explore key urban issues and gain an overview of the current challenges facing cities and their solutions. This is done in two parts - an online self-study course on SDG Campus (sdg-campus.de) and a city tour with a scavenger hunt in Hamburg.
The theoretical knowledge from the online course will be put to the test in the joint design of a scavenger hunt. The aim is to visit places where social, ecological and economic interdependencies and connections can be analysed and discussed in terms of sustainability. The aim is to familiarise students with the interconnectedness of various urban aspects and to inspire them to view urban life, systems and processes as a whole rather than as individual parts.
