In this seminar, we will explore counter mapping as a projective, activist and speculative tool to develop a critical understanding of politics of space, place, and bodies. Maps are a representation of reality, and are inherently political. Throughout history, maps have showcased regimes of knowledge and ignorance. Alternative forms of mapping such as counter mapping makes the politics of space visible and unveils hierarchical structures. Maps create and build a world as much as describing and measuring it. Acts of map-making can emancipate potential, enrich experiences, and diversify worlds.
Through transdisciplinary collaboration and participatory discussions, we will examine the role of architects and designers in formulating alternative maps and counter narratives. You will learn to critically engage with the different mapping methods, practices, and media that are shaping our language and perception of the future. Together, we will build upon the work being done in this field through Global South and decolonial perspectives, contributing collectively to critical architectural and design knowledge production.
