(This course will be held in English.) The larger part of this course is about construction materials: Those made with mineral binders (such as concrete and bricks), steel, glass, bitumen, and renewable materials like wood. We look at the raw materials from which they are made and their availability (including conditions of their extraction), the materials’ chemical make-up, properties, disposal and recycling, as well as hazardous substances in buildings, esp. the building stock. This part of the course will be rounded off by an architectural perspective on different building materials, esp. renewable materials: Which role do they play in today’s architecture, which can they play in the future?

The remainder of the course deals with municipal solid waste management. We focus on the German situation, which is typical for rich industrialized countries, but also look at other places in the world. We present information about waste generation and composition, raw materials, disposal paths and their environmental impacts, regulation of waste management, irregular disposal, and reflect on the concept of the circular economy, realities and opportunities for reuse and recycling.
