Constructive project - urban redensification in Vienna
Based on this year's proHolz student competition, we are developing sustainable strategies and projects (building additions, extensions and block edge extensions) for urban redensification using timber constructions.
For the fifth time, proHolz is organising an international competition for students on the topic of building with wood. On the basis of three exemplary building sites in the evolved urban structure in Vienna, the potential and possible applications of modern timber construction in urban redensification are being explored.
Three building sites in Vienna's 10th district south of Matzleinsdorfer Platz and east of the Favoriten Clinic are being studied. With a few exceptions, such as Harry Glück's Terrace House built in 1974 or Rüdiger Lainer's "House with Verandas" built in 2008, the neighbourhood is strongly characterised by perimeter block structures.
The design tasks for the three building sites include the extension of a school building, an addition to the edge of the block and the addition of a storey to a factory building constructed at the beginning of the 20th century. In close interaction with the existing structures and the urban context, innovative solutions for urban densification in densely built-up areas are required.
Students of architecture and civil engineering are invited to participate. The proHolz Student Trophy 24 is endowed with prize money totalling 15,000 euros.
Each group can choose a building site. The course is flanked by lectures on timber construction, building in existing contexts and historical building methods. In terms of content, the projects develop from an urban planning analysis, to concept development, architectural design and constructive elaboration. The results are submitted to the pro-Holz competition.
