This course is in English and open to everyone who is interested. REAP students have priority though as it is part of their required curriculum. The course offers a range of topics related to sustainability issues, with an emphasis on (but not restricted to) ecological and physical aspects of sustainability. Topics range from (by way of example) "Climate Change: The Physical Science Basis", "Micropollutants in the Water Cycle”, to “Air Pollution” and "Environmental Justice". We also look at concepts of sustainable development as they are offered by the natural and social sciences and in the political discourse. The topics are presented in part by HCU-internal, in part by external speakers who are experts in their field.
Expected from course participants is a high-school level general knowledge, as well as an interest, in the natural sciences and contemporary politics, and the willingness to actively work on their English vocabulary and grammar.
This course is offered in such a format that you can participate online. We will try out the hybrid format, might also stream into class a speaker who is not in Hamburg, or have the entire class session online. The format of individual class meetings will be announced in advance, and in this, we will take consideration of your class schedule. The first and second class dates (October 20th and 27th) will be online. Access data for the first two class sessions will be published here in the ahoi (check out the "Hinweise /Mitteilungen" section for this).
We start Fridays 09:00 a.m. sharp.
Our electronic learning platform is Moodle. Study material and regular information will be uploaded there. We will also perform short online-tests in the Moodle, the results of which will enter your grade.
Official enrolment and grade records are administered via ahoi, so you need to register for the course in the ahoi system if you want to earn a grade with it. Once the ahoi-enrolment in this course has been completed, you will receive access data to the Moodle platform of this course from your instructors.
A NOTE TO STUDENTS FROM OTHER INSTITUTIONS: You are welcome to join this course. Beware though that our student administration may tell you, upon your attempt to register, that you cannot get a place immediately and have to wait until the registration period has ended. That is a formality which the HCU student administration practices with external students. It does not mean that you will not get a place. If you are an external student and wish to attend this course, please make yourself known to the instructors (contact data below).
