Circular City resp. Circular Metropolis is a visionary concept for approaching sustainable urban development and climate mitigation. The course aims at exploring the concept by researching theoretical fundamentals and the practice in selected cities in Germany and internationally.

Circular City is strongly connected with concepts like Circular Economy, Urban Metabolism or Regenerative City. Whereas most of them concentrate on aspects of resource flows in specific action fields, Circular City connects such approaches with the spatial dimension of the city or city-region.

In practice, a number of cities have already applied the Circular City-concept. Frontrunners are Amsterdam, London, Copenhagen, Oslo and Stockholm, in Germany München, Kiel and Hamburg have been ambitious. In the context of European research funding, further cities have been participating in circularity-strategies (e.g. research projects FORCE and REPAIR). The course will assess selected good practices by analyzing the content of the strategies (goals, measures, implementation), the stakeholders and institutions involved, and the steering approaches (governance).

Learning goals of the course are (a) to understand the circularity approach as a strategy for sustainable urban development, (b) to get an international overview on circular city-practice, and (c) to develop and apply an assessment tool for evaluating circular city-strategies.
