Beschreibung:
The focus of this project is the development of a building design in Hamburg, which applies previously determined findings from a questioning and investigative examination of different facets of the urban phenomena of densification.

Structure
On the basis of invited guest lectures and own research, the course examines the global spectrum of diverse formations of urban and architectural density in order to determine typologies, concepts and strategies, which are then implemented in an interpretive manner in the design projects in Hamburg.

Density
On the one hand, the focus is on forms of physically built concentrations, such as the surface structures of the carpet settlements of post-war modernism and classic Arabic cities, as well as stacks of tower buildings in Toronto's gutted stock or the super slender pencil high-rises in New York, as well as construction within existing conditions or the habitation of minimal residual and water sites.
On the other hand, this course will rethink non-structural, ephemeral urban and architectural concepts of densification, such as programmatic and daily intensification, decentralized networks of mixed used climate-neutral energy supply systems, or digitally controlled potential uses of spatial availabilities.

Design Project
Based on the findings of previous discussions, the students will determine the location, extent and program of the design project themselves. The favored design scope can develop whatever seems conclusive: wether this will be a minimal intervention, such as a small-scale gap development or a floating structure, or a maximization in the form of developments, such as a high-rise building or innovative block interior structures. Anything goes!

Site
The course will consider options for the large areas of urban growth and urban renewal, such as the areas of the former Holsten Brewery or the eastern expansion of HafenCity in Hammerbrook, as well as potential for developing minimal remaining areas, the smallest vacant lots and stacks on existing structures along the main roads and waterways.

Field Trip
Over the first weekend in May the course will undertake a three night excursion to Rotterdam.

Format
Hamburg is the laboratory for experimenting with architectural interventions of densification.
