Beschreibung:
ORGANIZATION

This course is a study project at the Masters level offered for Civil Engineering (CE) and Urban Planning (UP) students, for whom it earns 10 CP, and for REAP students, for whom it earns 5 CP. The work loads will be configured accordingly. CE and UP students are expected to work in mixed groups. REAP students can work individually, or in small groups, or join the mixed CE and UP groups. This will promote interdisciplinarity and allows students to pursue their own interests (e.g., for REAP students to work on projects in their home countries around the globe).

Project language will English and German. We will be pragmatic and intend to take every one along who has a serious interest in this course. The language for the project reports can be English or German, depending on the composition of the respective group.

CONTENT: Urban Energy Storage for the Energy Transition

Energy storage is needed for balancing the fluctuations in energy supply and demand. The integration of renewable energies that fluctuate with the weather and the seasons makes energy storage even more crucial for the functioning of our energy system. Energy can be stored across various energy carriers and in different locations, above ground and underground. There are many technical possibilities. The challenge (to energy suppliers) is to select good storage options from the economic and ecological perspectives, finding the space for it (which is scarce in the urban setting), observing regulatory constraints (e.g., for safe operation) and finding or creating neighborhood acceptance.

In this interdisciplinary project, students will address the sizing (i.e. dimensioning) and siting (i.e. locating) of different energy storage systems in connection with the urban infrastructures they service. Engineering, regulatory, economic and social aspects have to be addressed in the planning of storage systems. This holistic approach to energy storage has not been practiced in planning, and less so in the implementation of energy storage facilities. Therefore, this course will provide excellent opportunities for research-based creative work.
