The seminar “Expanding Design” (EP) focuses on a wider notion of architectural design,
conceptionally as well as methodologically. Art and significant theoretical positions within
the humanities are hereby important points of reference. The seminar departs from the
influential essay “Sculpture in the Expanded Field” (1979) by art theoretician Rosalind Krauss in order to explore possible expanded dimensions of architecture and gain relational (design) knowledge. In the seminar, students will experiment with different media and techniques (drawing, photography, film, objects, text) with the aim to broaden their field of (inter)action. Each summer term, a different topic and focus will be introduced at the beginning of the seminar.
In collaboration with the seminar "Urban Types" (UT) and in combination with the Symposium "Living as Practice", EP will focus on the diverse notions of dwelling ("Wohnen"). Since the beginning of the Pandemic in March 2020 (Central Europe), the still ongoing changes are forcing us not only to (re-)think the notion of dwelling but also of living in general. In this context, EP will shed light on the topic of "dwelling" from various artistic and visionary practices and perpectives.
