Beschreibung:
Many cities in "countries of the global south" are facing rapid population growth accompanied by radical social, economic, ecologic and spatial upheavals. The course provides an overview of global urbanisation processes and challenges associated with the transformation of societies. We will review theoretical concepts within the specific context of selected countries and discuss fundamental development aspects regarding urban infrastructure, mobility, resources, housing, informal settlements, poverty, environmental problems and sustainable development, climate change and migration. We will look at these general questions against the background of the metropolitan areas of Manila/ Philippines and Buenos Aires/ Argentina. We will take these cities as specific case studies for places located in low income and middle income countries. Other case studies might be added. We will reflect critically on the history of development cooperation while the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) set the contemporary framework for our discussions.

Objectives:
- Discuss knowledge on major issues of urban development and transformation in emerging and developing countries
- Introduce development cooperation as a potential professional specialization for urban planners
- Use of visual illustration of information and comparative analysis

Selected books will guide the course, available at the HCU library (Semesterapparat):
- Daron Acemoglu & James A. Robinson (2012): Why Nations Fail. The origins of power, prosperity and poverty. (Available in English and German language)
- Daron Acemoglu & James A. Robinson (2019): The Narrow Corridor: States, Societies, and the Fate of Liberty (Available in English)
- Johan Norberg (2016). Progress: Ten Reasons to Look Forward to the Future. (Available in English and German language)

In a special event we will get an insight into German development cooperation (GIZ) by part of experts and researchers specialized in urban development in foreign countries . The traditional excursion to Eschborn/Frankfurt to the "GIZ Students' Day on Urban Development" is replaced this year by a two days online event, due to the pandemic.

Interested students might consider that this course takes the form of a seminar, not a lecture. During the course, groups of two student are expected to chose and discuss some of the issues and aspects described in the publications mentioned above and to submit a final paper analyzing a self selected "development topic" in March 2022. The course is planned to be attended personally (being present). All documents will be shared on the Moodle Campus of the course.

Events:
The course is scheduled always on Thursdays 11:15-12:45 / Room 2.101
Additionally, students of this course are invited to participate in the "GIZ Student's Days on Urban Development" on 4th + 5th November 2021 (Thu+Fri) 10:00-14:00 online.
