Bachelor Project WS 2016-17:
Hamm Stories – Innovative housing and working environments in Hamburg-Hamm
The eastern districts of Hamburg stand for many citizens as "Terra Incognita". About 164.000 inhabitants call the East of Hamburg their home. Their number could be rising in the future as the Eastern districts provide vast spaces for new neighbourhoods. Monofunctional urban spaces, isolated living quarters, dominant utilities and transport infrastructure, as well as large commercial and industrial areas shape the image of East Hamburg.
Nonetheless the area attracts new stakeholders due to its central situation in the heart of Hamburg: small and midsized companies of urban production; creatives, endeavouring the edges of urban growth; pioneers, seeking to connect housing and working environments; settlers discovering new niches in Hamburg’s Centre.
Diverse urban quarters with versatile identities, numerous green as well as attractive public spaces and hidden waterfront locations in the industrial areas are waiting to be explored and occupied by new urban pioneers. The second ‘denkfabrik’ aims to develop hybrid building typologies linking housing, recreation and work environments closely, maintaining the existing urban production actively in the area and therefore as built catalysts sustain the versatility of Hamburg’s East. Urban functions will no longer be seperated. The scope of low-emission, flexible production facilities to combine with housing in this specific urban context ranges from creative economies, urban agriculture up to industrial production.

Suitable participants will be highly motivated in innovative, creative architecture and bring an open minded approach towards the projects objective. Expected results are regular inputs and conceptions of
+ best practice projects / inspirational projects,
+ alternative proposals,
+ integration in an urban scale,
+ conceptual design,
+ preliminary design,
+ planning to the scale of 1:50 (partially or in primary details)
+ interim and final presentations
