Imaginary St. Pauli. An Urban Entertainment District as Represented in Selected Films and Photographs
(with excursions)
The entertainment district plays an important role in the urban landscape. It is specially important in determining what a city has to offer aside from living, working and consumption. Above all, the district is crucial to the evolution, experimentation and presentation of urban lifestyles, youth cultures and aesthetics, as well as various forms of entertainment.
Entertainment districts are of particular interest in terms of urban history and metropolitan culture, as well as architectural history. They are also of great importance in academic discourse regarding the development and shaping of popular cultures.
This seminar contextualizes the development of St. Pauli into Hamburg’s entertainment district. In addition to urban development and the history of special entertainment locations and what they have to offer, the seminar will revisit images of and about St. Pauli in film and photography. Content and methods will focus on the ‘picture-narrative of entertainment’. The aim of the seminar is to further develop the ‘memory bank’ of entertainment history in Hamburg.
