The urban infrastructure for water supply and treatment must be constantly maintained in a metropolitan region. For this purpose construction measures are necessary which mean a considerable intervention into the urban area. Especially when the infrastructure is located in the underground, an unfamiliar interaction with the urban surface arises during renovation. Temporary conversion of city space is required in order to carry out the construction measures. Replacement areas for existing facilities must be found, traffic flows rearranged and supply lines laid, and the construction project itself must also be planned. Depending on the construction project, local residents may also be affected by temporary changes and must be involved in the planning. Especially in large cities, maintenance measures for water supply and disposal are a complex and interdisciplinary task.

In winter, Hamburg Wasser is planning various remediation projects. Therefore a cooperation between Hamburg Wasser and the civil engineers and urban planners of HCU was established. The rehabilitation projects are interdisciplinary planned in cooperation with Hamburg Wasser. Among other things, structural issues of rehabilitation and rehabilitation strategies, traffic planning, security of supply, and much more play a role here. In addition, the rehabilitation measures are to be examined with regard to innovative development potential, e.g. the use of wastewater heat. Students are provided with basic information in lectures at the beginning of the semester. Interdisciplinary teams of two HCU-BIW and two HCU-SP students are formed, who work on the tasks together as in a small office. A large part of the semester's work is done in cooperation with Hamburg Wasser.
