Beschreibung:
Visions of the smart city are both promise and threat. Smart cities, on the one hand, present the prospect of an efficient and sustainable future through the digital optimization of the urban fabric. In this utopian version, smart cities appear the latest manifestation of a long history of wholesome and convivial ideal cities dating back to Claude-Nicolas Ledoux and Ebenezer Howard. On the other hand, smart cities are regarded as harbingers of a disturbing future of total surveillance and algorithmic control by big technology corporations. Such dystopian visions echo portrayals of cities as inhumane and menacing places from Friedrich Engels to Mike Davis.

In the first part of the seminar, a series of lectures will elucidate the ambiguities of smart cities. More specifically, the roles of big technology corporations, municipal governments, research institutions and civil society in planning, building, and challenging smart city projects will be elaborated against the background of smart city projects in Amsterdam, Barcelona, Vienna as well as Singapore and Songdo, amongst others.

The second part of the seminar is dedicated to independent research projects of student groups that are aimed at analyzing in more detail one specific aspect of smart city developments (such as, for example, the specific role of big technology corporations; municipal governments; research institutions or civil society) in a town or city of their own choosing.
