Beschreibung: The year 2019 marks the 30th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. The post-cold war era, however, instead of witnessing the obsolescence of borders as suggested by earlier globalization discourses, has seen more inter- and intrastate borders than ever before. Today, we live in a world of regional integration, supranational blocs and cross-border trade agreements. We live in the world of fast internet and flows of capital, goods, information, and people. Nevertheless, border openness remains selective; what is an open border to some might be a barrier to others. This seminar revisits key concepts and research agendas in border studies, to provide a common understanding of what we talk about, when we talk about borders. At the same time, acknowledging that borders have become more complex and diversified today, it focuses on contemporary case studies to explore dynamic bordering processes involving a variety of actors at different scales.
